The value of Georgian folk music, as a unique treasure, is famous all over the world. The phenomenon and meaning of Georgian music is a topic for discussion not only for the Georgian scientists, but also for the scientists worldwide. Famous musicians and scientists like Romain Rolland, Alan Hovhaness, Erich Schtokman, Alan Lomax, Boris Asafyev and many others gave high marks to the Georgian music.

In 2001 Georgian traditional polyphony was inscribed in the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.Classes for Georgian music started to appear in many countries of the world. They are always willing to participate in the scientific symposia held in Tbilisi.

Georgian folk music is predominantly vocal and is widely known for its rich traditions of vocal polyphony, musical dialects and genres.

Traditional Georgian folklore comprises song and instrumental music tightly linked with the verbal folklore. Therefore the harmony between these three components created the centuries-old Georgian folklore we have today.

Georgian polyphony is functional, i.e. every part of the song has its own function. There are songs for one, two, three and four voices in Georgia. Most of them are the songs for the three voices. It can be said that Georgian musical thinking with its “sound image” is well expressed in the three-voiced songs.

Solo or one-voiced songs can be found in every musical dialect. Such songs can also be accompanied by the instruments. Though choral one-voiced songs are less frequent.

Two-voiced songs can be heard in the melodies and movements of the various genres and regions.

Four-voiced songs are typical for the west part of Georgia, specifically in Gurian and also in Acharian work songs (“Naduri”)

Georgian polyphony is based on different compositional principles: drone, ostinato, complex and contrasted principles.

It was still the beginning of musical education when enthusiastic Georgian culture representatives foresaw the following. They knew that new generation’s spiritual discipline as well as the improvement of musical knowledge should be based on national values. Despite this self-evident truth, Georgian folk song teaching was not always at its height. Either the past mistakes or national conscience intensified the formation of the national patriotic consciousness in the youth.

Studying Georgian singing has always been a family tradition in Georgia. Over the centuries, love of singing and various singing styles were handed down from generation to generation by the outstanding Georgian folk singers. Among the followers of this tradition is the Onashvili family. Father and son Tariel and Kakhaber Onashvili have been serving this glorious task for a long time. Be closer to the national musical roots and vitalize the national thinking into folk songs is the main principle of their work. Their song performance is really distinguished with their specific style, unique and beautiful voices, harmony and sensible interpretation of highly developed compositions.

Tariel Onashvili – holder of number of honored prizes, the honored artist of Georgia, one of the brilliant performers of Kartlo-Kakhetian song dialects. He has handed on the baton to his son and set him the love for singing as an object.Kakhaber and Tariel Onashvili were the virtuoso soloists of the ensemble “Rustavi”. In 1994 they founded the boys` choir “Mdzlevari”. More than 50 boys have been mastering the folk singing in the choir since then. The word – mdzlevari in ancient Georgian meant chanting and was connected to the flock of singing birds.
