Georgian professional choral music creative and performance biography counts over one century. At the same time, artistic values of Georgian choral music are defined by its organic fundamental language – unique polyphonic national folk music, which is recognized by international community. These features have contributed to creation and active work of professional choirs in Georgia. The increasing number of such choirs has given start to Festivals that assists to show the achievements of the groups and encourage them to compete to name the winner. Such Festivals have been held started from 1920 - ies and were called Choral Olympiads. One of the first was organized in Kutaisi, Georgia and later in Tbilisi, the capital, slowly adding certain varieties of genre to them.
Professional choral festivals have become more organized and periodic since 1975, when these events were founded under the initiative of Choral Conducting Chair of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire prof. Vakhtang Paliashvili. They took place in the Big Hall of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire until 1980.
Traditional Festivals have been renewed from 1986 in Gori, Georgia with assistance of local music school director Sandro Kacharava, and on the basis of Gori Women’ Choir - conductor Shalva Mosidze, the International Choir Festival was founded.
Under the initiative of a manager of the Georgian National Music Center, culturologist Maya Chachava since 2011 GNMC, with active assistance of Tbilisi City Hall, this Festival took place in Tbilisi in the Mikeladze Hall of GNMC. Since 2013 Tbilisi City Hall has founded this Festival as “Tbilisi Choral Music Festival”.
The aim of the Festival is to keep Georgian Choral performing traditions, to develop and promote them; to socialize existing academic groups with each other and present them to the audience.
Gala Concert of the Festival traditionally introduces all the participant groups singing together, thus Georgian audience has an opportunity to listen to a big form symphonic piece – cantata, oratory accompanied by Georgian Philharmonic.
In 2012 an oratory of Georgian composer Otar Taktakishvili “On the footsteps of Rustveli” was performed under Archil Ushveridze.
